April 5, 2003 - Welcome
Flurries came on April 1st as predicted. Conditions were such that the snow was very slippery. Quite a number of car accidents resulted. By afternoon +7°C temperatures had melted most of the snow, though in shadows the soil remained partially frozen. The picture of 98-KD-1 was taken then.
Late in the afternoon of April 3rd icy pellets started to fall. This continued all day April 4th and resulted in many more traffic accients. The pictures below will give you some idea of what we've had to contend with. The top layer of ice is so thick that it will support my weight.
Below normal temperatures (-1 to -3°C at night; +1 to +3°C daytime) are to continue until at least April 9th. Normals for the period are low -1°C, high +10°C. During much of the time it has been dull, so we've also been missing radiant heat from the sun.
I had been using time earlier in the week to take flower measurements as well as tally expected F2 sophenensis x danfordiae bloom. I can report there will be over 60 new F2 hybrids blooming for the first time! That brings the total to 117.
Of course what's more important than the number is the quality of those hybrids…
I am anxiously awaiting the anthers of a number of important hybrids to properly open so key crosses can be made.
